UFS lecturer’s murder accused to plead not guilty


Duane Petrus – A man accused of murdering a University of the Free State lecturer in Bloemfontein in September is expected to plead not guilty to the charge.

Khethang Ramolula’s legal representative read out an affidavit in court today, indicating that his client will plead not guilty to the murder of Lehlohonolo Mathengtheng.

Mathengtheng was a lecturer and doctorate student in the university’s Department of Medical Microbiology and Virology.

He succumbed to a stab wound to the neck during the incident which took place inside his flat in Willows. There was also an indication that the trial might be transferred to the High court.

The investigating officer, Thabo Mokheti, testified during Romolula’s bail application today that he and the deceased were friends.

He was arrested three weeks after the crime in Botshabelo.

Ramolula was granted R1 000 bail today and will make his next court appearance on 12 December.
