Bloemfontein – University of the Free State (UFS) claimed two wins in the men’s track events during the final leg of the Varsity Athletics in Pretoria, at the Tuks Athletics Stadium on Monday night.
The event proved a bit more of a challenge for the UP-Tuks team, but Kovsies’ duo of Rynhardt van Rensburg and Wayde van Niekerk were on top of their game.
Van Rensburg took home first place in the men’s mile in a time of 4:05.60, snatching victory from NWU-Pukke’s Jerry Motsau in the last few metres of the race, with teammate, Van Niekerk claiming first in the men’s 400m in a time of 45.37.
Meanwhile, the Kovies’ Gideon Trotter lost out to Akani Simbine from Tuks who clocked a time of 20.70 seconds to win the men’s 200m sprint.
Elsewhere, Kovsie’s JVA Steytler took home a win in the High Jump with a jump of 2.08m.
The 400m hurdles saw defending champion and record holder, Anneri Ebersohn, who originates from Bloemfontein, run a season’s best in 57,00 seconds while team mate Anuscha Nice claimed the 800m title in a time of 2:08.78.
With the athletics programe concluding in Pretoria, Varsity Sports shifts its focus to Varsity Hockey.
Men’s hockey will take place from 3 to 19 May at Wits University in Johannesburg, the University of Stellenbosch, the University of the Free State and the University of Johannesburg.
The tournament gets underway with all eight hockey teams (Maties, Rhodes, UFS-Kovsies, UP-Tuks, UJ, UCT-Ikeys, NMMU and Wits) competing at the University of the Witwaterstrand.
