UFS elects SRC presidents

GALOOME SHOPANE 23-year old Governance and Political Transformation student, Phiwe Mathe, has been elected as the Free State University’s SRC president at the Bloemfontein campus.

Mathe beat his two opponents with 45 % from a 32% voter turnout. Mathe and his counterpart from Qwaqwa campus, Motlogelwa Moema, say they speak of leadership that is transparent and accountable leadership to the students that they serve.

“Basically it’s a huge victory for student governance and making the University of the Free State work better in terms of governance, and number two it’s a huge victory for student activism. For the first time around there’s an activism driven SRC with a clear mind and a clear plan to deliver on what students really need,” says Mathe.

Amongst Mathe’s plans is the introduction of a student assembly where the SRC will be held accountable and to also integrate off-campus students into campus activities.
