Two men have been sentenced in the Bloemfontein Regional court for theft and damaging Transnet infrastructure.

Tomo Maema (50) and Molewa Ramoiloa (39) were caught in the act of stealing Transnet signal cables by Park Road police and private security on 24 July 2024.

“They were immediately arrested and charged with damage to infrastructure and theft from infrastructure,” stated police spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli. “Further investigation by the Park Road Detectives Economic Group revealed that the two are also illegal immigrants.”

Following further investigations, the accused pleaded guilty on all charges, for which they were both sentenced to ten years imprisonment, as well as six months for contravening the Immigration Act. Half of their sentences have been suspended for five years.
