Two Park Road police constables found dead identified

REFILWE MEKOA

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says it has informed family members of the two police constables who were found dead in Bloemfontein.

Spokesperson Grace Langa confirmed that 28-year-old Sipho Mbelekane and 24-year-old Kefuoe Phohlela were found dead at the parking of the Park Road Police Station yesterday. Langa says Mbelekane and Phohlela were off duty and still wearing their police uniforms.

She says they were found with gunshot wounds in their heads. It is alleged that the two were dating and Mbelekane shot Phohlela before shooting himself. Langa says they have opened a case of inquest and murder.

“As IPID, we cannot confirm whether the two constables were having a relationship or not. We don’t know that and it can only be revealed after the investigation has been concluded. When we conclude the matter, we will also know what the circumstances that led to the shooting were,” she says.

Mbelekane was working at the crime prevention section while Phohlela was at the charge office.
