Two mineworkers shot, suspect on the run

An unknown man suspected to be a Lesotho national is wanted in connection with murder and attempted murder after two mine workers were allegedly shot while waiting at the bus stop corner of Lindsay and Jorissen Street in Rheeder Park in Welkom.

The suspect is believed to be dark in completion with a beard on his chin. He is also medium build and about 1.5 metres tall.

Police report that on Friday, 25 January 2018 at 05:05 two mine workers were shot at and one was killed at the scene, while the other was wounded and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

“The unknown man was allegedly pretending to be waiting for transport at the bus stop. The two mine workers were also waiting at the bus stop for transport. A maroon Toyota Conquest picked one of them up and the unknown man allegedly went to the driver’s side and spoke to him as if he was requesting a lift.”

“After their conversation, this unknown man pulled out a firearm and started to shoot the occupants. The driver was shot in the head and the passenger managed to flee with gun wounds on his arm and thigh. The second mine worker who was waiting for the bus fled after seeing that two occupants were shot, explained police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng.
