Two Mangaung officials suspended for dehorning rhinos

Two senior officials from the Bloemfontein Zoo have been suspended after it was discovered that they had dehorned two rhinos without authorisation.

Mangaung spokesperson, Qondile Khedama says that on Monday, 24 April 2017, it was discovered that two senior officials had undertaken the dehorning process of two rhinos without obtaining official authorisation from the city manager, Advocate Tankiso Mea.

Khedama added that the owner of the assets , in this case the rhinos, is the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, and as the accounting officer, the city manager has to be informed of the process of dehorning before it is done. The city manager should also be made aware of the storage of the horns.

An investigation is underway, and the municipality will act on the basis of the outcome.
