Two off-duty police officials in the Free State were arrested last night in Bloemfontein, in connection to an alleged hijacking of a motor vehicle. The officials, from Parkweg and Bloemspruit respectively, allegedly hired a meter taxi from Phahameng location to Windmill Casino in the city.
According to police spokesperson, Chaka Marope, an argument erupted between the two men and the driver, and one of the police held the driver at gun point. Marope added that there was a female passenger in the car, who also witnessed the incident. He confirmed that nobody was injured in the attack.
He says the two officials have been charged with attempted theft of motor vehicle, attempted theft of cash, as well as point of firearm.
“According to information, the two officials hired a meter taxi to Windmill casino. Upon arrival they changed their mind and requested to be dropped off at the CBD instead. The driver has also alleged that the officials stole the money that was in the car. In addition, they were also caught trying to restart the car with cables,” he said.
The two men are in police custody, and are expected to appear at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court on tomorrow (Monday).
