Twenty Bfn minors arrested for gang activities

A total of 20 out of the 73 men arrested last week for gang-related activities in Bloemfontein were minors

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the province has found that 20 out of the 73 men arrested last week Thursday for gang-related activities in Bloemfontein were minors.
This is according to NPA spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, who said the teenagers who appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday, were released into the custody of their parents and guardians.
“They were released on warning and they will all appear in Court 10, which is the juvenile court, on 12 July, as police are investigating the matter further,” Shuping said.
Meanwhile, the remainder of the men, who are of legal age, will appear in court again for their bail application on 6 June.
The men are believed to be involved in the notorious Maroma gang that is terrorising residents in various townships in Mangaung.
They were arrested for being in possession of dangerous weapons and are under police investigation for their involvement in gang-related activities.
The men are being held in police custody. Police spokesperson, Motantsi Mokhele, said more charges could be added, depending on the findings of the investigation. The accused will remain in custody until their next court appearance. – Pulane Choane
