Trio to appear before Ventersburg Court over stolen ARVs

Three suspects arrested while in possession of ARVs in the Free State are expected to appear before the Ventersburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

This, after they were arrested over a week ago following a search and seizure operation by the Welkom Tactical Response team. The police found 265 bottles of ARV tablets during the operation.

The trio’s appearance on Tuesday comes a day after two suspects, including a health official from the Eastern Cape Health Department, were remanded in custody following their appearance before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on similar charges.

The two will again appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on January 29. HIV/Aids advocacy groups have meanwhile confirmed that they will continue seeking justice against those who enrich themselves by stealing from the poor.

TAC’s Anele Yawa and PAC’s National Chair Molahlehi Taba, confirmed that they are mobilising masses and will be picketing outside the Ventersburg Magistrate’s Court in protest of the trio being granted bail. TAC and PAC, amongst other organisations, have called on the Justice System to ensure that justice is served and all those involved are brought to book as the theft of ARVs is in their view equivalent to murder.
