Tributes pour in for well-known Agri journalist

Tributes are pouring in for Free State-based journalist Marleen Smith, who passed away this weekend at her home in Bloemfontein.

She worked at numerous publications as a journalist, most notably Landbouweekblad and also freelanced for OFM News’ agriculture segments. Her death was announced by the Agricultural Writers of South Africa, of which she was also a member.

The guild extended their deepest sympathy to her loved ones, especially her two children. They describe Smith as an excellent technical writer who focussed mainly on crop production, regenerative agriculture and soil health.

Friends, loved ones and colleagues took to social media to praise her, with many from those in the media fraternity who describe her as being highly intelligent and a warm human.

Journalist Thinus Ferreira wrote an emotional message on her Facebook wall, lauding Smith by saying there are few people who can let one feel that everything will be okay, and that you are not alone. He added that when he was a rookie-journalist at Die Volksblad he saw her as a beloved and wise older sister, and she always had time for everyone.
