SABRINA DEAN – ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe is one of the high profile ANC representatives expected to address the Free State memorial service of former President Nelson Mandela in Bloemfontein today.
The service takes place at the Christian Revival Church from 10am. Provincial ANC spokesperson Thabo Meeko says the service will be led by provincial ANC chairperson and Premier Ace Magashule and will also be addressed by the national leadership of Cosatu, the SA Communist Party and Sanco.
The "Free State has got a special place in the history of the ANC and Tata Mandela is part and parcel of that important history, the ANC was formed here," he says.
Meeko says everybody is invited to attend today’s service but adds the venue only takes around 10 000 people and access will be granted on a first come first serve basis. He says despite the fact that rain signifies a blessing in African culture, they decided to move the venue from the Free State Stadium over fears that the forecast rain might disturb proceedings.
He says if there is a massive overflow of public authorities will endeavour to broadcast the service on large screens.
