Today in SA History: 7th March


Historical Event:

• 1952: Job Masego, WW2 veteran who sunk a German supply boat while a prisoner of war after the capture of Tobruk, dies in Springs, Tvl. A street and a school in Kwa Thema have been named after him and in 1997 the SAS Kobie Coetzee was renamed SAS Job Masego.
• 1977: Saudi Arabia announces it will give one billion dollars in aid to Africa.
• 1982: The Commission of Inquiry into the constitutional, political, economic and social development of Natal/KwaZulu, set up by Chief Buthelezi in August 1980, publishes its report. Its central recommendation that Natal should be merged with the KwaZulu ‘homeland’ to form a new multi-racial regional administration is rejected by the government.
• 1990: Violence erupts when 50 000 (or 100 000 according to police) residents from GaRankuwa, Mabopane, Soshanguve and areas in the Odi district present a petition listing political and civic grievances at the Odi magistrate’s court. Bophuthatswana police fire at the crowd, killing eleven people and wounding 450. The crowd causes millions of rands of damage.
• 2005: Outspoken Kenyan independence hero Bildad Kaggia (82), a friend and later rival of the country’s founding president Jomo Kenyatta, dies after a long illness.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1927: Hannes Harrs, S.A sculptor, is born in Eckernförde, Germany.
• 1964: The Minister of Posts and Telegraphs, Dr Albert Hertzog, confirms that the government’s policy regarding television is unchanged. There is no question of television being introduced.
• 1921: Bobby Hendricks (63), SA saxophone player, dies in Cape Town.
• 1921: Todd Tozama Matshikiza, musician, composer and writer, is born in Queenstown, Eastern Cape
• 1933: Game of "Monopoly" is invented.
