• 793: Vikings plunder St Cuthbert’s monestary on Lindisfarne.
• 1896: 1st car is stolen.
• 1961: The Portuguese steamer Save breaks up off the coast of Mozambique, 227 people die as a result.
• 1980: Foreign Minister ‘Pik’ Botha announces that all senior members of the South African diplomatic mission in Salisbury have been withdrawn.
• 1991: Michael Mapongwana, chair of Western Cape Civic Association and a taxi driver taxi are killed in the taxi.

• 1938: Alan Solomon, SA violist and music professor, is born.
• 1999: Stephan Bouwer (50), author of television productions, cabarets and lyrics, dies in his sleep in Johannesburg.
• 1943: Gerda Hartman, SA soprano, is born.
• 1948: "Sally" closes at Martin Beck Theater New York City after 36 performances.

Sports:

• 1933: The SA rugby team beats Australia 17-3 in Newlands, Cape Town.
• 1961: Test Cricket debut of William Morris Lawry, v England at Edgbaston, 57.
• 1986: 40th NBA Championship: Boston Celtics beat Hous Rockets, 4 games to 2.
• 1992: New York Yankee pitcher Steve Howe is banned from baseball for 7th time.
