• 2004: Mark Thatcher is served with a subpoena by the SA government to answer questions, following Pretoria’s agreement to assist Equatorial Guinea in its own investigation of the alleged coup plot.
• 1998: Google is founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students at Stanford University
• 1999: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake rocks Athens, rupturing a previously unknown fault, killing 143, injuring more than 500, and leaving 50,000 people homeless.
• 2004: Parliament has been defrauded of about R17m by some MPs in the alleged voucher scam, according to SAA’s latest report.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1895: Hilda Postma, daughter of the Rev. S. Postma and author of books for children, is born in Burgersdorp, Cape Colony.
• 1962: Thomas Molatodi Lehupela, S.A. sculptor, is born in Paradys Location, Thaba’ Nchu, Orange Free State.
• 1975: Maria Elizabeth Rothmann (MER), Afrikaans author, dies in Swellendam, CP, thirteen days after her 100th birthday.
• 1996: Rap artist Tupac Shakur shot multiple times in drive by shooting in Las Vegas, dies 6 days later.
• 2000: 17th MTV Awards: Eminem & Aaliyah wins.

Sports:

• 1969: Carol Mann wins LPGA Molson’s Canadian Golf Open.
• 1963: Pro Football Hall of Fame dedicated in Canton Ohio.
• 1980: John McEnroe & Bjorn Borg stage one of the greatest US Open finals as 21 year old McEnroe fends off Borg to win his 2nd straight title (7-6 6-1 6-7 5-7 6-4)
• 2005: Well-known Blue Bull rugby player, Ettienne Botha, is killed in an accident on the N1 freeway.
• 1991: 1st South African international competition in 25 years, gymnastics.
