• 1975: Maria Elizabeth Rothmann (MER), Afrikaans author, dies in Swellendam, CP, thirteen days after her 100th birthday.
• 1996: Rap artist Tupac Shakur shot multiple times in drive by shooting in Las Vegas, dies 6 days later.
• 2000: 17th MTV Awards: Eminem & Aaliyah wins.

• 1969: Carol Mann wins LPGA Molson’s Canadian Golf Open.
• 1963: Pro Football Hall of Fame dedicated in Canton Ohio.
• 1980: John McEnroe & Bjorn Borg stage one of the greatest US Open finals as 21 year old McEnroe fends off Borg to win his 2nd straight title (7-6 6-1 6-7 5-7 6-4)
• 2005: Well-known Blue Bull rugby player, Ettienne Botha, is killed in an accident on the N1 freeway.
• 1991: 1st South African international competition in 25 years, gymnastics.
