• 1893: Gandhi’s first act of civil disobedience.
• 1954: 1st microbiology laboratory dedicated (New Brunswick NJ).
• 1986: After enduring more than twenty years of government banning, Winnie Mandela is freed of all state-ordered restriction.
• 1996: SA President Nelson Mandela to step down.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1922: Jaco van der Merwe, SA baritone, is born.
• 1943: Pieter Willem Adriaan Mulder (65), champion of Afrikaans, dies in Pretoria.
• 1975: "Thank God I’m a Country Boy" by John Denver hits #1
• 1986: Madonna’s single "Live to Tell" goes #1.
• 1990: Michael Jackson hospitalized for chest pains.

Sports:

• 1992: In SA’s first ever Fifa sanctioned match the Bafana Bafana, SA soccer team, beats Cameroon 1-0 in an international friendly game in Durban, the first international game in more than three decades.
• 2007: SABC Sport reporter Maseru Koaho, known for his expertise in football and boxing reporting, is killed in a car crash on the N12 towards Potchefstroom.
• 1978: 32nd NBA Championship: Wash Bullets beat Sea Supersonics, 4 games to 3.
• 1985: Boris Becker (17) of West Germany beats Kevin Curren of SA on Wimbledon and becomes the youngest ever tennis champion.
