• 1789: Fearon Fallows, first Astronomer Royal at the Cape, is born in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England.
• 1974: Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie agrees to military supervision of his government and speedup of democratic reforms.
• 2004: Philip Rabinowitz, Polish born South African centenarian, sets a new world record by running the 100m in 28.7 seconds. Owing to a power failure the time is not electronically recorded and it is not acknowledged as a world record.
• 1996: Hot Mail, a free internet E-mail service begins.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1895: Katherine Lee Bates publishes "America the Beautiful".
• 1928: Patrick Tilley, UK, sci-fi author (1st Family, Blood River) is born.
• 1990: 2 Live Crew release "Banned in the USA" the lyrics quote Star Spangled Banner & Gettysburg Address.
• 2003: Barry White, American singer, dies at 58.

Sports:

• 1959: Four matches are played to mark the official start of professional soccer in southern Africa.
• 1998: The SA rugby team beats England 18-0 on a very muddy Newlands field, Cape Town.
• 1987: Imran Khan takes 300th Test Cricket wicket, only Pakistani to do so.
• 1993: Brandie Burton wins LPGA Jamie Farr Toledo Golf Classic.
