• 1978: Schalk J. Botha (73), SA economist, dies in Pretoria.
• 1978: Laugh-in’s Judy Carne arrested at Gatwick Airport for drug possession.
• 1997: Coldest World Series game Marlins vs Cleveland (38°F).
• 2008: India launches its first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan-1.

• 1901: Afrikaans books author, Lulu Latsky is born.
• 1901: Louise (Lulu) Latsky, SA author of children’s books and the first woman to be awarded a doctorate at the University of Stellenbosch, is born in Carnarvon, CC.
• 1906: André Huguenet, stage-name of Gerhardus Petrus Borstlap, SA actor, producer and author, is born in Bloemfontein.
• 1981: George Andrew Manuel, scholar, author and one of the first Coloured journalists in SA, dies in Cape Town.

Sports:

• 1971: Amanda Coetzer, SA tennis star and winner of several Sportswoman of the Year Awards, is born in Hoopstad, OFS.
• 1974: Thabo Mooki, SA football player who was the first winner of the Kick Off Footballer of the Season, 96/97, is born in Moletsane, Soweto.
• 1999: Zolile Mbityi, SA flyweight, wins the World Boxing Organisation (IBO) title.
• 2005: The Cheetahs (Free State rugby team) scores a surprising victory over the Blue Bulls on Loftus Versveld, beating the Bulls 29-25 and preventing them from winning the Currie Cup four years in succession. The Cheetahs’ last win in the competition was way back in 1976.
