• 1985: Mbuyiselo Mbotya (35) affiliated to KWT Youth League/UDF, dies in custody from head injuries in King William’s Town.
• 1992: President F.W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela, leader of the ANC agree, at a peace summit, to resume constitutional negotiations that were suspended in June.
• 2009: Macedonia officially enters the recession after experiencing a drop in GDP of 0.9% in the first quarter, followed by 1.4% in the second quarter
• 2004: International Day of Peace Vigil.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1894: William George Ballinger, SA senator 1948-1960, is born in Birmingham, England.
• 1874: Walter Spiethoff, royal opera singer and SA singer and composer, is born in Austria.
• 1928: "My Weekly Reader" magazine made its debut.
• 1966: Jimmy Hendrix changes spelling of his name to Jimi.

Sports:

• 1955: Heavyweight champ Rocky Mariano KOs Archie Moore in round 9.
• 1988: Mike Tyson smashes TV camera outside his Bernardsville NJ home.
• 2004: Beverly Mashinini wins a bronze medal in the Athens Paralympic Games.
• 2004: Wheelchair athlete Ernst van Dyk, cut off from a certain gold medal by Mexico’s Saul Mendoza in the 1 500m final Athens Paralympics at the Olympic Stadium, wins a silver medal.
