• 1974: Chris Blignaut (77), SA folk singer, dies.
• 1951: Robin Williams, Chicago, Illinois, American actor and comedian (Mork & Mindy, Good Will Hunting) is born.
• 1990: Pink Floyds’ "Wall" is performed where Berlin Wall once stood.
• 1816: Baron Paul Julius von Reuter, founder of the Reuters News Agency, is born as Israel Beer Josaphat in Germany.

Sports:

• 1928: The SA rugby team loses 6-7 against New Zealand in Johannesburg.
• 1941: Gawie Carelse, former SA rugby player, is born.
• 1945: Barry (Anderson) Richards, Springbok cricket player, is born in Durban.
• 1962: The SA rugby team loses the second test 3-0 against the Lions in Durban.
