• 1916: Die Huisgenoot, oldest still existing Afrikaans magazine, appears ten months after Die Burger, and is the second publication of ‘Nasionale Pers’.
• 1967: Jan Gysbert Hugo Bosman (85), composer of the first Afrikaans lieder (art songs), dies.
• 1955: "Almost Crazy" opens at Longacre Theater New York City for 16 performances.
• 1963: Beatles form "Beatles Ltd" to handle their income.
Sports:
• 1942: Tennis champion Frew Mcmillan is born in Springs.
• 1939: The newly founded Northern Transvaal Rugby Union plays its first Currie Cup match on the new Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
• 1942: Frew McMillan, doubles player with Bob Hewitt and Wimbledon tennis champion, is born in Springs.
• 1998: The home game between Bafana Bafana, the SA soccer team, and Zambia ends in a tie with 1-1.
• 2002: Bafana Bafana, the SA soccer team, beats Scotland 2-0.
