• 1829: Siamese twins Chang & Eng Bunker arrive in Boston to be exhibited.
• 1961: Martin L King protests for black voting right in Miami.
• 1990: President F. W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela hold emergency talks in Pretoria as violence spread to Soweto.
• 2012: Police open fire killing 34 striking mineworkers at Marikana.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1924: The first radio licence in SA is issued to Dr J. van Rensburg of Carnarvon.
• 1800: The Cape Town Gazette and African Advertiser, a bilingual newspaper and the first to publish news and advertisements, is published for the first time.
• 1930: The first colour sound cartoon, called Fiddlesticks, is made by Ub Iwerks.
• 1954: "Sports Illustrated" magazine begins publishing.
• 1986: "Papa Don’t Preach," goes #1 for 2 weeks.

Sports:

• 1743: Earliest boxing code of rules formulated in England (Jack Broughton).
• 1924: The SA rugby team beats the British Isles 7-3 in Durban.
• 1972: James Dalton, Springbok hooker from Gauteng, is born.
• 1998: Weetabix Women’s British Golf Open.
• 2008: Usain Bolt sets a new 100 metres dash world record of 9.69 seconds at the Beijing 2008 summer Olympics.
