• 1951: Allister Mackintosh, pilot and ‘father’ of SA aviation dies in Port Elizabeth. He earned a D.S.O. in the Battle of the Somme in April 1916.
• 1982: IMF lends Mexico $3.8 billion due to threatened bankruptcy.
• 2012: The final US presidential election results are declared after Barack Obama wins Florida to defeate Mitt Romney 332-206 in Electoral College votes.

• 1888: Prof. Jacobus Johannes le Roux, linguist and Afrikaans cultural leader, is born in Franschhoek.
• 1969: "Sesame Street" premieres on PBS TV.
• 1993: "Joseph & the Amazing" opens at Minskoff Theater NYC for 223 perfs.
• 2010: Alan Menken, famous Disney composer, receives the 2,442nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
• 1977: Brittany Murphy, American actress is born.


• 1991: The SA Cricket team is re-admitted to international cricket.
• 1938: Jannie Engelbrecht, SA rugby player, is born.
• 1971: US table tennis team arrived in China.
• 1978: Larry Holmes KOs Alfredo Evangelist in 7 for heavyweight boxing title.
• 1985: Jane Blalock wins LPGA Mazda Japan Golf Classic.
