2008   Parliament convenes to consider the resignation of President Thabo Mbeki. Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki resigned as president of the Republic South Africa on Sunday 21 September 2008. Parliament convened on Monday 22 September and accepted his resignation.

2004    Free State born Teboho Mokgalagadi wins gold in the Paralympic Games. George Teboho Mokgalagadi, with his hair dyed golden, won a Paralympic world record gold medal 100m sprint in his first international competition at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.

1998    Troops from SA and Botswana cross into Lesotho and storm the royal palace.

1990     Dingaan Thobela, lightweight of SA, wins the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) title.

1985     Diederik Johannes Opperman, Afrikaans poet, dramatist, litterateur, and professor of the University of Stellenbosch, dies in Stellenbosch.

1983   The Republic of South Africa Constitution Bill is enacted.

1952   Andries Johannes Botha, SA sculptor, is born in Durban, Natal.

1950   Peter Whipp, SA rugby player, is born.

1828   Shaka Zulu is murdered. Zulu chief and founder of the Zulu empire, is murdered by his two half-brothers Dingane and Mhlangana. Dingane assumes the throne.
