African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, Albertina Sisulu, a wife to former ANC Secretary, Walter Sisulu died at her Linden home, Johannesburg at the age of 92. Often referred to as the ‘Mother of the Nation’, she was a nurse and one of the most important leaders of anti-Apartheid resistance in South Africa.

It was with Walter that she attended the first conference of the ANC Youth League where Albertina Sisulu was the only women present. In 1948 she joined the ANC Women’s League and in the 1950s she began to assume a leadership role – both in the ANC and in the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW).

The second of five children of Bonilizwe and Monikazi Tetiwe, Albertina was born on 21 October 1918 at Xolobeni, Tsomo in Transkei (now Eastern Cape). ). She and her husband Walter were jailed and banned several times for their political activities and she was constantly harassed by the Security Police.

She was buried next to her husband, Walter at Newclare Cemetery, Johannesburg on 11 June 2011.
