Three shot dead at a Vredefort Farm

A 50-year-old man and two children were shot dead on Saturday night at Palmietkuil Farm in Vredefort, Free State.

Police spokesperson Masilela Langa explained that Hansie Raath wasn’t killed in a farm attack as all parties involved were having supper before the gruesome act ensued. According to Langa, Raadt earlier that day picked up a man at a nearby BP garage and also fetched six children who resided on a nearby farm for supper.

“While they were all sitting, the man went to the bedroom and fetched a pistol and immediately pointed Raath with  the firearm and shot him,” he said.

Langa said the two boys, an eleven-year-old and fifteen-year-old, respectively, were shot dead while trying to escape. A murder case has been opened and police are still investigating.

Police are pleading with the community to assist them with information. Langa said the man fled with Raadt’s bakkie which was found abandoned near Kroonstad on Sunday. The police believe the man might have stolen some firearms from the farm.

Police requested anyone who has information to contact Vredefort Police Station on (056) 931 0002 or Warrant Officer Jabulani Kebile on 078 322 4479.
