Three explosions went off at around noon at the University of Free State’s Bloemfontein Campus on Monday.

According to some witnesses, the loud bangs came from the university’s West Block as well as the Main Building between 12:00 and 12:30.

Teboho Mpholo, a student who was having class in the West Block’s second floor at the time told Courant that students and staff had to evacuate the buildings surrounding the Chemistry Building.

Mpholo says smoke was then noticed coming from behind the university’s Main Building. The West Block has been cordoned off following the incident and fire trucks were present at the scene.

No injuries were also reported.

UFS spokesperson, Lacea Loader, told Courant that the situation was under control and said the university would issue a press statement on the matter.
