Theunissen suspects to remain behind bars until next appearance

SABRINA DEAN – Two suspects who appeared in the Theunissen Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the murder of 68-year-old Martie Bester will remain in custody until their next appearance later this month.

Police spokesperson Harry Nagel says Lekgotla Matatiele, 22, and Molelekoa Mothibeli, 21, appeared briefly today on charges of murder and robbery. "The case was postponed to 21 january for further investigation and they will remain in custody until their next appearance," he says.

Nagel yesterday told Bloemfontein Courant both suspects have been positively linked with the case. He says investigations will determine whether any more suspects were involved.

According to Nagel, the suspects are locals from Theunissen. They were arrested yesterday and police also recovered three firearms.

The Theunissen community was alerted to the incident early on Monday morning when smoke was seen coming from the house on the farm Erfbloem where Bester lived alone. Her body was later discovered in the gutted house, while her burnt out bakkie was also found in the vicinity.
