Bloemfontein – South Africa women’s hockey legend and world record goal scorer Pietie Coetzee has announced her retirement from the sport.
The hockey legend, who hails from Bloemfontein, made the announcement on the teams’ bus, ahead of their World Cup ninth and tenth place play-off against Japan in the Hague this morning.
Fitting to her stellar international career, the 35-year old Coetzee scored the opening goal her swansong for South Africa, as the Proteas claimed 2-0 win over the Japanese to take her career tally to an amazing 282 goals in 287 Test matches.
Coetzee’s 59th minute penalty corner drag-flick was followed by a Dirkie Chamberlain strike from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to hand South Africa the ninth place.
