As side hustles gain popularity in South Africa, employees are finding more than just financial benefits from these ventures. Side hustles are improving employee morale, enhancing skills, and creating new opportunities for both individuals and businesses.
According to the 2024 Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor, 57% of South Africans are earning additional income from side jobs, contracting, or after-hours work.
Megan Dedekind, Area Manager at Business Partners Limited, believes this shift reflects the evolving work landscape. “In the past, employees were expected to dedicate themselves entirely to one company, often at the expense of their own development and fulfilment. Today, side hustles are seen as a way to gain more control over one’s career and future, offering both financial security and personal satisfaction,” says Dedekind.
One of the main benefits of side hustles is their positive impact on employee morale. Pursuing a passion project outside of work can make employees happier, which often translates into higher productivity in their primary jobs. “A side hustle can act as a creative outlet, helping employees to unwind and recharge. It’s not just about making extra money; it’s about creating a sense of balance and purpose,” Dedekind highlights.
Side hustles also allow employees to develop new skills, which can be applied in their main roles. From small business management to mastering social media marketing, these experiences make workers more versatile and valuable. “An employee with a side hustle brings a wealth of experience and skills that can often be directly applied to their primary job,” Dedekind explains.
Additionally, side hustles foster stronger professional networks, offering new business opportunities, partnerships, and even clients. Dedekind emphasizes the potential for businesses to benefit from this trend. “The key is to create an environment where employees feel empowered to explore their passions while still excelling in their primary roles,” she concludes.
