Duane Petrus – The Thabong police station in Welkom has been recognised as the best performing station in the Free State for the fourth consecutive year.

The station commander, Cois Muller, also scooped the award for best station commander in the province at the ceremony which was held in Bloemfontein recently.

Muller says his staff is disciplined and deserved it because they are part of a collective that wants to get the job done and are passionate about their job.

Muller admitted that all was not smooth sailing this year, as nine of their members were arrested in September for corruption related to illegal mining.

He added that the community of Thabong can testify about the good work being done at the station.

"I think the community will agree to that, because the feedback we get from them is very good. There are some challenges too, when people feel we are not serving them, but we address those issues, and, as far as possible we try to serve the needs of the community at large," Muller says.

The station will again compete for the award of the best performing station in the country, an award which they won last year.
