A school of excellence to develop sports in rural schools, will soon be built in Thaba Nchu. The school, which will be sponsored by Transnet, will be known as the Transnet School of Excellence.

Moseki Rabotapi, Motheo Netball Coordinator, told Bloemfontein Courant that they still need to select a school where the facilities will be built. As an introduction to the school, a schools tournament was recently held in Thaba Nchu. The Albert Moroka High School was a hive of sports activities such as soccer, chess and netball during the tournament, which was also sponsored by the Transnet Foundation.

The main aim of the tournament was to develop sports among learners in rural areas as they don’t get the same opportunities as learners in townships and urban areas. The best performing players have been selected to represent Thaba Nchu at a national sports tournament for rural learners in the Eastern Cape in December.

Motinwe Ramathe, a chess coach at Albert Moroka, said although the day was to promote the three sporting codes, namely netball, chess and soccer, he is very passionate about chess because learners who play chess are good at problemsolving.

“As a school we are grateful to the Transnet Foundation for having chosen our school to host a tournament of this nature.” – Lebakeng Nkabi
