Teenagers in court on murder, robbery charges

Three teenagers will appear before the Bethulie Magistrate’s Court today, 21 September 2020, on charges of murder and robbery.

This comes after the suspects, aged between 16 and 18, were arrested for the murder of a Bangladeshi shopkeeper.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said the incident took place on 18 September 2020 at around 01:00 at New Stands Location, Bethulie.

“It is alleged that the suspects entered the shop by breaking the door after which the shopkeeper was hit on the head with a bush axe until he fell on the floor. An undisclosed amount of money, packets of cigarettes and airtime vouchers were stolen,” said Makhele.

According to him, when members of the police arrived on the scene, an eyewitness described the suspects. The police later traced them to a shack in the same area where they were found sleeping.

The three teenage suspects were arrested and items suspected to have been stolen, including cash, were found in the shack as well as blood stained shoes.
