Teenage murderer to appeal judgement

SABRINA DEAN – People who have been supporting the teenager convicted of the Griekwastad triple murder say they will continue to stand by him during the appeal process.

The man who has been serving as the minor’s guardian today said there will definitely be an appeal against the judgment. The guardian took the teenager into his home shortly after the murders and he and his wife have repeatedly maintained their belief in his innocence.

The boy was earlier this year found guilty of murdering Deon, Christel and Marthella Steenkamp on their farm Naauwhoek in April 2012, as well as one count of rape and one of defeating the ends of justice. Judge Frans Kgomo on Wednesday handed down sentence of 20 years for each of the three murders, 12 years for the rape of Marthella and four years for defeating the ends of justice, all to be served concurrently.

The boy, who was a few months shy of sixteen when the crimes were committed, celebrates his eighteenth birthday in prison today. ]

He is reportedly not allowed any visitors until his initial assessment has been finalized in about three weeks.
