Tswelopele Correctional Centre based outside Kimberley was on Thursday announced as 2015's top performing inmate school with a 91.6% pass rate. The Department of Correctional Services' Subashini Moodley says the University of the Free State (UFS) and Central University of the Technology (CUT) assisted the department with resources while financial services group Liberty Life donated a digital library which allowed inmates to engage in digital learning including Maths and Physics subjects.

According to Moodley, learners were taught by the management team and motivational speakers from the Nelson Mandela Foundation were invited in for encouragement.

“From the beginning of last year we made a commitment that we are going to work towards a 100% pass rate. It called for all of us to be very involved. It was a team effort and a good involvement of the community. We also had a member of a community who was very good in maths who gave extra lessons to the learners.”
