SABRINA DEAN – The important role of teachers is in the spotlight today as countries across the globe give recognition to those in the profession with World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe has also taken the opportunity to wish all teachers in the province, the country and the world a happy World Teacher’s Day. Spokesperson Howard Ndaba says the theme for this year is “Invest in the future, invest in teachers”.
"We are delighted to have the teachers we have at present and are calling on the community to really support teachers and the teaching profession," he says.
Ndaba has also urged communities to respect the profession. "The profession teachers in general really deserve our respect," he says.
He adds that this year’s celebrations are particularly significant for South Africa as it marks the twentieth anniversary of World Teachers’ Day. According to Wikepedia, the day was established by Unesco in 1994 to mobilize support for teachers and ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.
