Teacher accused of calling SGB members the K-word to face disciplinary hearing

Free State maths teacher, who allegedly called school governing body members the K-word in a WhatsApp message, is expected to face disciplinary action on Friday.

The Spokesperson for the Department of Education in the Free State, Howard Ndaba, confirmed that the hearing will take place at 10:00. Flip Snyman, a teacher at the Jagersfontein Intermediate School, allegedly sent several racist WhatsApp messages to Sanet de Villers, who serves as a member of the SGB and is also a teacher at the school.

Ndaba says Snyman faces two charges, including contravening the Employment of Educator's Act by using the "K-word" and displaying disrespect at work by calling De Villiers a derogatory name, this after the matter was brought to their attention last week by the media.

“Upon those allegations we immediately intervened by setting up a small committee to investigate these serious allegations. We have now completed our investigation and the alleged person who sent those messages, will be appearing in front of the committee on Friday.”

Snyman has declined to comment, saying his trade union is dealing with the matter.
