Inspired by a personal experience, Chief Leeuw, who has been at the forefront of cancer awareness initiatives since 2012, spoke to Bloemfontein Courant about the upcoming Annual Mangaung Childhood Cancer Awareness Fun Walk that will take place on 28 September.
The second installment of this initiative is to raise awareness of childhood cancer, as well as to highlight the challenges faced by children and their families. The aim is also to promote efforts to find better treatments and ultimately cures for paediatric cancers.
According to Leeuw, the main aim is to share possible signs and symptoms of cancer in children with the community and participants. “My daughter (Sibongile) was diagnosed with Leukemia Cancer at the age of 14 years and she is a cancer survivor at the age of 28 years,” he expressed.
Leeuw added that Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation, Free State Region, is also one of the organisers of the event.
“The passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers of CHOC aim to save lives through early detection and comprehensive support programmes for the families affected by cancer. They offer psychosocial, emotional and practical support as we augment the different medical fraternities,” he explained.
The walk that is hosted in partnership with Miss SA Plus World and Choc will take place from 07:00 at the Mangaung Outdoor Centre. The entry fee for kids is R10 and R20 for adults. Hotdogs will be sold at the venue as part of fundraising for CHOC House.
