Younger audiences and those young at heart are in for a treat as the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Department of Drama and Theatre Arts is set to debut the newly constructed Mealie-Moon-Rocket production.

Written and directed by Barend Kriel, ‘the mealie-moon-rocket’ was inspired by Errol Ross Roelofse’s 1980s Milelie-Maalie-Maantuig.

According to DeBeer Cloete Lecturer in the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts and Program for Film and Visual Media, the production explores issues such as tolerance, compassion and the importance of letting go of resentment.

“When the retired friends, Jasper and Celeste, leave the Fairview Retirement Home via Jasper’s newly constructed Mealie-Moon-Rocket, they find themselves unwilling participants of an epic conflict between the Darkside and the Lightside of the moon. Together with the good-hearted, celestial Empress Kazandra and her trusted confidant Moonie Moonrock, the intrepid troop endeavour to overthrow the maliciously vile Emperor Zarcon and his scheming goons, Pitch and Dark,” says Cloete.

The show made its debut on the 14th of September at the Scaena Rehearsal Room Theatre on the UFS Main Campus and will continue run until 17 September.

Tickets are R25 for all ages. Groups larger than 10 people only pay R20 per person. Tickets can be booked online through Webtickets.
