Switch off

Eskom reiterated its call to all consumers to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly by “Living Lightly”.

Eskom requested that all electricity customers save at least 10% of their electricity usage and sustain these savings. Residential and commercial customers can make the biggest difference by switching off geysers and pool pumps from 5pm – 9pm; switching off non-essential lights; using air-conditioners efficiently and responding to the Power Alerts messages.

The demand for electricity picks up rapidly in the evening when residential customers arrive home from work and switch on lights, stoves, and heaters. Customers have been asked to keep their electricity usage as low as possible in order to ensure that the demand for supply is met.

Eskom has urged all South Africans to partner with them to save 10% of their electricity usage especially during peak periods, from 5pm to 9pm. This will make it significantly easier to manage the power system during this challenging time, while also enabling them to do planned maintenance to ensure the reliability of their plant.

Eskom continues with its planned maintenance schedule and is scaling it down to prepare for winter while also managing unplanned outages that add more pressure to an already tight system. The refuelling of Koeberg Unit 2 is progressing well and is expected to get back on time.
