A suspect is being sought by the Free State police in Riebeeckstad, Welkom, after an elderly woman was scammed and lost an undisclosed amount of cash last Sunday morning. Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, said an elderly woman was approached by an unknown suspect who offered to help her at the ATM.

“After the suspect had left her, she tried to withdraw money but there was no money left in her bank account,” Thakeng said. “Grandchildren are advised to accompany their elderly family members to the ATM to avoid strangers robbing them by pretending to assist them when they want to withdraw their hard earned cash.”

He further appealed to community members, especially the youth, to accompany their grandparents to shops, ATMs and banks so that they are not vulnerable and do not become victims to criminals. He  issued a stern warning to residents to not allow or accept any assistance from anybody offering help when they are withdrawing cash from ATMs.

A case of fraud has been registered for further investigation.

“Any information about the suspect or his whereabouts will be welcomed by investigating Warrant-Officer Neville Wessels of Welkom Detective Services at telephone number 057- 391-6268 during office hours,” Thakeng concluded. – Lucky Nkuyane
