SABRINA DEAN – A 36-year-old man is expected to appear in the Ventersburg Magistrate’s Court today after he was arrested with about a ton of abalone estimated to be worth R1-million at the weekend.
Thabong police spokesperson Malebo Khosana says the suspect was arrested by members of the Welkom Flying Squad on the N1 between Winburg and Ventersburg after police received a tip-off.
He says officers were warned to be on the lookout for a white Isuzu bakkie travelling towards Johannesburg with a cargo of abalone. Officers patrolling the highway noticed a vehicle fitting description, made a u-turn and were able to stop the vehicle.
A search revealed about a ton of abalone and the driver, who was en route to Johannesburg from Port Elizabeth, was arrested.
Khosana says he is expected to appear on a charge of possession of abalone.
