While conducting patrols in the Bloemfontein Central Business District on Sunday, members of the Crime Prevention Unit, Park Road Police Station, were stopped by a taxi driver who informed them that there was a male carrying a big travelling bag containing a strange ‘moroho’ (spinach) at the Majakathatha taxi rank area.
“The police swiftly responded to the information and at the taxi rank in Power Street found the male with the bag. They then asked for permission to search the bag and the owner agreed. Inside the bag they found Khat plants. The Police asked the man if he knew that the plant is a drug and he replied that he sells it to people to make them happy and it gives them strength,” said police spokesperson Thabo Covane.
The Khat plants were weighed and found to be 28,7 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R50 000. Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, a stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite, and euphoria.
The 34-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of drugs and is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 18 March 2019. – Seithati Semenokane
