A Grade 9 student of St Andrew’s in Bloemfontein, Siyabonga Gans, has grown full confidence in his art since the last time Bloemfontein Courant spoke to the young and self-taught artist.
With an astounding average of 94%, Siyabonga showcases a passion for both the arts and his academics. He recently received R40 000 from ENGO to ensure his dream to attend school at St Andrew’s in Bloemfontein remains a reality.
“We are so blessed every year and only feel we can invest in a child who is chasing his/her dreams,” said Marinique du Plessis, organiser of the ENGO project. The young artist mentioned that he has now grown into independence as he is staying at the hostel. He now dreams of studying in the medical field.
“I’ve also learned to improve my observational skills and be more accurate. I’m also exploring more mediums and dwelling into creativity,” Gans mentioned.
Recently, he participated in the St Michael’s Art Competition, as well as the Bloem Show Competition, and received A plus merits at both competitions.

“My art helps me perform better in academics as it serves as an outlet for me to draw inspiration from when I struggle to study.”
As much as Gans enjoys attending school at St Andrew’s, he also mentioned that he is looking forward to the day that his art is displayed in art galleries around South Africa.
Gans mentioned that he will forever be grateful for the donation and the difference that ENGO has made in his life. He also displayed gratitude to his art teacher, Ms Nellie Brisley.
