Strike puts G4S inmates on lockdown

DUANE PETRUS – Employees at the Mangaung Correctional Facility want the institution to be run by the government because of alleged poor working conditions.
Hundreds of uniformed Group 4 Security personnel marched about 3km to the facility to address issues of intimidation, dangerous working conditions and threats by senior management.
Employees say they were willing to report for work, but turned around at the gate when officials refused to take their memorandum of demands.
Director of contact Management, Joe Mmako, could not confirm how many employees are absent today.
"The inmates are currently on lockdown, but some of the basis services like food have been provided to them. They have missed out on programmes and various educational classes," Mmako said.
Popcru provincial secretary, Rankele Msinto, says their members will stay away from work until their demands are taken seriously.
