Strict penalties for possession of child pornography

LANI FOUCHE – A criminal law expert, Stephen Tuson from Wits University, says people who are found guilty of manufacturing and distributing of child pornography will face very strict punishment.
This follows the cracking of a massive international child pornography ring, with links to South Africa. "The Sexual Offences Act criminalises the creation, distribution and possession of child pornography," he said.
"The films act also has a definition of child pornography and prohibits its possession and distribution and both statutes provide for strict  penalties or punishments of fines and/or imprisonment," Tuson said.
Raids carried out in Canada recently led a team of international investigators to South Africa and resulted in the arrest of six people in Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom and Lichtenburg, among others.
