Police in Bloemfontein has confirmed that a bronze statue of the former Koisan Chief, David Stuurman, was stolen from the garden at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum this weekend.

The statue forms part of a heritage site development initiated by the National Heritage Project (NHP).

Police spokesperson Chaka Marope says the statue to the value of R500 000 disappeared between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

The stolen statue was among 20 odd bronze figures of the founding fathers of the ANC, like John Dube, Sol Plaatje and Thomas Mapikela. The heritage project is the brain child of the CEO of the NHP, Dali Tambo.

Heritage manager, Sarah Haines, will only comment later.Stuurman is one of a few known people who successfully escaped more than once from Robben Island.
