Feed 500, an initiative started by husband and wife Calvin and Nombulelo Mpuru, aims to not only give back to the needy of Bloemfontein but hopes to spread love during the season of giving.

The duo, who currently reside in Pretoria but has ties with Bloemfontein, came up with their initiative of spreading joy after a “very challenging” year.

“For us, 2021 has proven to be very challenging. Ever since Covid-19 started, a lot of people have lost their jobs and are now struggling to make ends meet,” said the Mpurus.

They told Bloemfontein Courant although most South Africans will be heading home for the festive season to enjoy some family time and good food, there will be people who will not be able to enjoy this type of luxury. “Giving back to people who are less fortunate will show that there is still some good in the world and we hope more and more people will come together and do the same where they can and just spread love and happiness.”

Feed 500 aims to feed 500 homeless people in Bloemfontein over the course of the holidays. The duo has asked members of the community for any donations that can be made, including food parcels, toiletries, sanitary pads, clothes and blankets.

“Even if you have a clipper and want to help by cutting or trimming somebody’s hair, it will also be accepted.

“We don’t just give back or spread love in one way, all help is appreciated.”
