The Electoral Commission of South Africa has opened applications for special votes until 18 April 2019. These applications are open for anyone who will not be able to go to a voting station or not be able to vote on 8 May 2019, the official voting day.
According to IEC Free State Communications Officer, Mathabo Rasengane, voters may be visited at home if they will not be able to cast their ballots at a station. “This is only available to voters who are unable to reach a voting station (a voter may apply to be visited at an address outside of their voting district where registered) due to physical infirmity, disability or pregnancy,” she said. Voting will be conducted on 6 and possibly 7 May.
There will be special votes cast at various stations. “These are available to any voter who is unable to cast their ballot on voting day. These votes can be cast at the voting station where you are registered between 9:00 and 17:00 on Monday 6 May and Tuesday 7 May 2019,” explained Rasengane.
Citizens are able to apply online, via SMS or at their local IEC office. You can apply online by submitting an application via a secure portal at https://www.elections.org.za/IECOnline/Special-Vote-Session.
“All applicants for both types of special votes will receive an SMS notifying them of the outcome of their application once it has been processed,” said Rasengane. – Nomaqhawe Mtebele
