Bloemfontein – Willem Postma Primary School has recently introduced an unfamiliar sporting code, skiing, in Central South Africa.

Willem Postma is the first school in Central South Africa to introduce this sport and the headmaster, Johan Pienaar, told Courant Sport that education is about facing challenges and exploring.

“Education is about opportunities – that is why we jumped at this one. It is not every day that children from Central South Africa get the chance to take part in a sport like skiing,” he said.

Skiing which is derived from the Old Norse word "skíð", which means ‘split piece of wood or firewood’, is a recreational activity and competitive sport in which participants attach skis to boots or shoes and use them to travel on top of snow.

“I’m not sure if we are the first school in the Free State, but I’m sure that others will be encouraged to offer the sport as well. It’s an exciting sport especially because the whole family can take part,” said Pienaar.

He also highlighted that the children will be visiting Tiffindell Ski Resort near Rhodes at the end of May for their first lessons.

“From there on there will be further opportunities for learners to proceed (for example clinics, tournaments and championships). These events will also be held at Tiffindell,” he added.
